The Contrast House – Paintings
“Clouds in Heaven” (Oil)
This was the first painting I did for The Contrast House. This was the first teaching I got from P’Pan. In this painting he taught me about value and and lighting. Taking a picture and breaking it down to 3 values. Then finding the focal point and focusing around it. This was a struggle in being patient and taking time on a painting. With P’Pan’s patience he was able to help me to channel my struggle in producing my first oil painting. When people see this they are reminded about Heaven and being inspired of God’s beauty in creation.
“The Beauty in Lonliness” (Oil)
This was the second painting I did for The Contrast House. I remember that I went so many different directions in this painting. I did more of my style, which at best in skill made this painting undesirible and child like. I remember looking at it and knowing there was something wrong. P’Pan kept advising me in a different direction. Maybe because of my insecurity I tried to will it to be better, but in the long run because of my stubbornness and thinking “I can do it”, it was getting in the way of learning the skills that were needed to make this truly a masterpiece. P’Pan kept encouraging me, knowing that I was better than I gave him. I finally stopped, listened, and really took in his advice, and I started to do what he said. He directed me to start doing impressionist style painting. This style can be very easy, yet time consuming. It is one brush stroke at a time. There are no short cuts. This painting was the catalyst that pushed me to empty all that I “thought” I knew about painting and opened the door to really learn the skills. I called it “Beauty in Lonliness” because at the time the Lord was speaking about my lonliness and knowing there is a beauty in it. I think about the time right after the storms that Jesus calmed. Right before each time He was alone, alone asleep in the boat, alone walking on the water. The aftermath there was a beauty of the sea.
“The Peace in Lonliness” (Oil and Acylic)
Have you ever been alone on an open feild? There is so much peace in sitting and listening to the wind and animal life. This painting was one that P’Pan had no instruction to other than it was finished before I thought it was finished. As he told me this, in my heart I was saying there is so much more I can do to this painting. He said this is your story you are not finished with here, there is more that He wants to do here. At the time it was hard to let go and allow unfinished work to be hung. Though as guests came and stayed they felt a peace in the painting. The room that is painting s hanging in has had more guests in it than any other room of The Contrast House. Very interesting to me. The one painting I felt most incomplete has been seen by more people than any other painting that I have done for The Contrast House. What I might think is foolish God wants to raise up and have it become wise.
“The Mountain Top in Lonliness” (Oil)
This painting took me the longest of all the paintings I completed. It was about 3 months, a very long process and this was done with no interaction with P’Pan, other than texting him pictures of the process. He was at a point with me that he trusted me to be able to paint on my own without His supervision. This was a privilege, yet a scary thing for me. The clouds have a realistic impressionistic style yet the ground, lion, tree, and mountain were all impressionism. The fun thing was that I used multiple colors in the lion and the tree to give it a contrast to the other factors in the painting. The tree was probably the funnest part of the painting, yet I was the most proud of how the mountains came out.
“The Pertection of Lonliness”
This painting is 8 feet tall and 5 feet wide, I believe. This was meant to be my masterpiece for The Contrast House. Yet, because of us coming back to USA and doing a DTS in San Francisco, I have to leave it unfinished and incomplete. P’Pan Told me that this will take years to finish. I hated to leave this painting unfinished and incomplete, yet my heart hopes that we return to Hua Hin, Thailand to complete it. In this next season of life the Lord has shown us that He will bring a focus to us as a family unit. The first step is DTS and not to look ahead but to submit to each step.
These paintings I did for The Saxaphone Lounge were challenging and fun. I was able to submit to the processes and learn from other artists.
Prophetic & Personal
Bird Red and Blue
Some friends of mine spoke a word over this.
“I see heart shapes in the flowers and blood flow… Life… light and fresh feelings.
My eyes are drawn to the birds eye. The bird is at peace, still. There is stillness and peace around the eye of the bird as well as wisdom. (On our deck we have many birds that are comfortable with us but never at rest or peace, always twitching and on alert.)
I also see something related to the composition, the way the impressionist background sets the bird into focus. It gives me a feeling like there is a force field bubble around the bird, not to keep it but to protect it… I feel like that is the Holy Spirit around us, He doesn’t keep us caged but goes where we go and protects us. It feels like that is the origin of the birds peace, without it the bird by its nature is fragile and needs to be on constant alert.
The Hebrew letters that make up that word Shalom, are The shepherd’s staff, That directs the consumption, of Chaos… Peace is thus a restoration to the state of God’s order as Chaos is consumed.
I feel like the Bird is in a state of Shalom, in a bubble where there is no chaos.”
While out with the MST Project, I observed the team ministering that evening and felt that the staff were like spiritual fighters out in areas of darkness, yet emboldened by the power, grace and love from heaven above.
While staying with some friends and their ministry in downtown Bangkok, I got a vision of 2 children playing over the city. Their faith was like giants compared to the city itself. I wrote Isaiah 58 around the whole painting. This was my favorite painting to do while being in Thailand. I am grateful to have done this for dear friends and their ministry.
