Let’s go on a little adventure.
I realize that a lot of our posts are more of what God is doing with us, our roles here, etc. But many of you can’t REALLY picture our lives here in Hua Hin. So why don’t you join me on a day in the life of the Martinez family.
[Times are rough estimates]
0730– Elijah sits up, looks at Daddy with a big smile on his face and then poops.
0735– Daddy gets up and changes the poopy diaper, while Mommy attempts to sleep a little longer.
0740– Elijah plays, Shawn starts coffee, Stephanie snores.
0800– The perfect husband brings wife coffee in bed. Elijah gets bored of playing by himself and decides it’s time to eat again for the 7th time since going to bed that night. Stephanie no longer gets to snore.
0810– Elijah starts to fall back asleep while nursing, Shawn starts to fall asleep while cooking, and Stephanie is officially wide awake- I guess it’s time to check FaceBook.
0830– Breakfast is ready and consists of eggs, rice and vegetables. Maybe Elijah will stay asleep or maybe he will decide to make breakfast extra challenging for Mommy and sit on her lap trying to grab everything off her plate.
0900– If this is a weekday, Shawn heads to the studio to paint. Stephanie stays home and teaches Elijah 3 different languages, gymnastics and household chores while simultaneously doing a workout, creating a ministry website, and cooking the entire weeks meals… okay that’s a lie. The day looks more like nurse, nap, nurse, nap, nurse, nap for Elijah while Stephanie will slowly learn new things on WordPress and attempt to make a website for The Contrast House, while secretly wishing her talented husband could be cloned.
0900– If this is a weekend, the Martinez family heads back to their King-size bed and tries to implement “family nap time”.
1000– If this is a weekday, please skip to 1500.
1000– If this is a weekend, Stephanie throws a load of cloth diapers in the front-loading washer that she feels so fortunate to have. Shawn sweeps the floor. Elijah chases the broom.
1200– Shawn packs his backpack with toys, diapers and money. Stephanie grabs the baby carrier AND the stroller, knowing that Elijah will most likely prefer neither and just make his parents very, very strong by demanding to only be carried.
1220– (yes it took 20 minutes and I’m never quite sure why) The Martinez family walks to the mall (which is a mile away) during the hottest part of the day because they are getting restless and might as well hang out where they don’t have to pay for the air-con. Don’t worry though, they make sure to walk directly below the telephone lines, since there are so many lines that they provide shade for this farang (foreign) family.
1221– The Martinez family walks past a taxi stop and the taxi driver asks if they want a taxi even though they didn’t ask the Thai that just walked right past them, and even though they see the Martinez family walk past them everyday and say no every time they ask.
1225– The Martinez family stops at the fruit stand that is too good of a deal to pass up. They buy half a pineapple and a quarter of a watermelon for 10 baht each (33 cents each), while the 70 year old Thai grandma holds Elijah and smiles with just as toothless of a smile as he.
1230– They arrive at the mall, still holding Elijah in arms while pushing the stroller all the way up the wheelchair ramps. Finally air-con.
1235– Stephanie buys cha yen (Thai iced tea) for 40 baht ($1.33). Shawn buys an iced cappuccino for 45 baht ($1.50). Elijah attempts to grab both of these things but settles for the watermelon and a bottle of water with a straw.
1240– They head to the food court, where they take turns eating 55 baht ($1.80) spicy pork and rice and holding Elijah. Elijah takes turns eating his watermelon, trying to eat his parents’ food, and waving at strangers.
1300– The Martinez family wanders the mall aimlessly, smiling at strangers and being tempted by sweets. Elijah starts to get fussy.
1305– Stephanie sits back down at the food court and nurses Elijah who attempts to pull the nursing cover off of his head, even though entire families are already staring and whispering about the farang who is nursing her baby in public.
1330– Elijah is asleep on Stephanie’s lap. Stephanie attempts to get up without waking up the baby or flashing the entire mall, even though her left leg is asleep.
1335– The Martinez family walks back home, Elijah still in arms, taxi drivers still offering taxis.
1400– Elijah stays asleep when Stephanie puts him down (this is a lucky day). Shawn puts away the food that somehow got purchased even though they didn’t plan to buy anything. Stephanie hangs diapers out to dry outside.
1500– If this is a weekday, Shawn gets off work and heads home.
1500– If this is a weekend, Elijah is still asleep (this is a really, really lucky day).
1700– If this is a weekday, Shawn cooks dinner (Stephanie is a lucky woman). Stephanie makes up songs and dances around with a giggly baby.
1700– If this is a weekend, the family crosses the street and waits for 20 minutes for a songtheaw (a truck taxi that has benches in the bed) so that they can catch a ride to Cicada, the weekend night market, for 20 baht (66 cents). OR they head to the beach using the same strategy of holding the baby and pushing the stroller for about a mile down alley streets.
1900– The Martinez family is now home, showered, and Elijah is taking a nap.
2100– Shawn and Stephanie are relaxing in bed, getting ready to go to sleep. Elijah wakes up from his nap ready to play.
2300– Elijah finally falls asleep. Shawn falls asleep. Stephanie falls asleep, but not before taking a nice, long gaze at her two sleeping boys.
2400-0730– nurse, nap, nurse, nap, nurse, nap. Poop.
